The Most Reverend Robert N. Lynch, DD, bishop emeritus of the Catholic diocese of St. Petersburg received his bachelor of arts degree from the Pontifical College Josephinum in Worthington, Ohio and his master of divinity degree from Pope John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts in May, 1978. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Miami.
Bishop Lynch is known for his time spent as the General Secretary of the United States Catholic Conference (USCC) and the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) and rector and president of St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami. He was ordained a bishop and installed as the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg on January 26, 1996.
Bishop Lynch made Catholic education a top priority in the diocese. He also took an active role in planning for the future construction of new Catholic high schools, and improvements to the existing schools.
Realizing the changing nature of the Church, Bishop Lynch actively promoted opportunities for lay person to take an active role in church sponsored ministries. Catholic sponsored health care benefited from his vision. Bishop Lynch has been an active member of the Catholic Health Association of America. His work to build up lay ministries and outreach to the poor are especially well known. He donated 18 acres of land to create Pinellas Hope, a shelter for homeless persons. Bishop Lynch retired on November 28, 2016.
Bishop Lynch has long been a friend of St. Anthony’s Hospital. Last year, the entrance portico of the hospital was named in his honor.
